I think I might be depressed

Postby bethd_15 » Mon Oct 11, 2010 9:12 pm

I'm a 16 year old girl and I haven't felt good for a while now. It started many months back and I felt down for ages. I picked up again for a bit but for the past month and a half, I have felt awful again. Finally, I have spoken to someone about this (I hate talking about things) but I don't feel any better for it. BUT at least now someone knows how I'm feeling. I've got a lot of symptoms of depression: continuous low mood/sadness, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, very low self-esteem, I'm tearful, I get angry and irritable with others quite a bit, I'm losing interest in things and don't feel motivated to do things such as school work, etc. My parents know I am feeling down, as I've said, but I think I may need to see a professional because I can't go on like this any longer. I just don't know how to ask my parents about this?

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Hi Bethd_15

It's really good that you've talked to someone and it sounds as though you've read up a lot about depression too. I'm guessing from what you've said that the person you've told is a friend, rather than a professional. A good first step in talking to someone who can help is calling a helpline or talking to someone online (see links below). As for telling your parents; maybe it would be easier to talk to just one of them to start with. Find a time and a place when there aren't too many distractions and when they've got time to listen properly (i.e. not while they're getting ready to go out to work, or get other children off to school!). It might also help to have some information handy so that they know where they can go to find out how to help you.

It's my parents that I've spoken to already and they know I'm not feeling good at all but I don't think they know how bad it is. :/ The only problem is that I don't know how to breach the subject of maybe going to see someone; even if I did see a professional, I don't know how I'd cope with talking about things.

Thanks for the links, I'll take a look (:

You could write a letter to your parents telling them how you feel and asking them to help you arrange some conselling.
A letter will be really powerful way of expressing how you feel and I doubt they will ignore you if you take the time to put it all down.
You can also go to your doctor to arrange conselling.
Don't worry about what to say the counsellor will ask you question that will help her determine what's going on and you will probably start speaking and not be able to stop once you realise they are there for you, are totally confindential, won't judge you and will offer you practical solutions

I thought about writing a letter but I'll just see how I go. If I still feel as bad in a week, I'll consider writing a letter or speaking to them again. :/

How are you feeling now? Have you thought any more about writing your parents a letter? I would suggest making an appointment at your doctors as they are in the best position to refer you for counseling if they feel that you need it.
