Uni still getting me down

Postby Raven » Sat Jan 19, 2008 10:25 am

Came back to uni, relatively looking forward to it but am as miserable as ever. Spend all my time inside/or on my own. Never feel like socialising, don't have many friends. Joined clubs but never go as my depression/anxiety makes me talk myself out of it. Am seriously considering dropping out..getting therapy and starting 1 or 2 years down the line. This isn't right for me at the moment.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Got to uni and it wasn't what they expected? Of course being depressed doesn't help..

Don't know what to do :( Think I'm going to go mad.

Hi! No you're not alone! I am in my second year of uni now and i'm not enjoying it at all really. My first year was an absolute nightmare - my flatmates were awful, I hardly made any friends and I was so miserable, especially since my friends at other unis were all having great times. This year I'm commuting from home which isn't ideal but I didn't want to drop out completely. I never expected it to be this way at all and I'm so disappointed and depressed about it all. I'm just hoping it will get better! If you really are majorly unhappy it may be worth re-applying elsewhere -I'm starting to think I should do that too, I've heard others have and have found it much better elsewhere.

Hey,

Where do you go to uni? What do you study?

I don't feel too bad today, as I went to a different place and met an old schoolfriend. I study in North Wales and there's not a lot going on really..which makes me avoid going to town cause it's boring.

There are so many conflicting thoughts in my head. If I quit, will I regret it? If I go elsewhere..Would I feel the same? I know a large part of it is due to my depression..which is why I'm being cautious about leaving..as I have met some nice people but still.. I dont have any 'close' friends.

Hi!

I study French n English lit at Cardiff uni. I'm glad you had a better day....I had an exam today, it was very difficult!!!! Yeah i know how u feel bout not wanting to give up too quickly. Do u enjoy your actual course? You have made friends which is good so maybe things will improve over time? I guess going elsewhere could be just as bad/worse but on the other hand it could be great. As i said before, I know quite a few people who changed unis and none of them have regretted it.

Lol, just read over what I said, I'm no help really am I!!!! At the end of the day you have to do what's best for you....it's just figuring out what that is that's the problem!!!! I'm in exactly the same boat.

Hey,

I'm doing French and English Language, lol!

How you finding French? Mine is pretty dire which makes me want to avoid speaking class. I seem to have forgotten everything since A Level, and hate speaking infront of people. God knows why I chose it! lol. Plus my only real friend left at Christmas. Everyone else seems so close-knit as I started 4weeks late. I would so love to be bilingual though. Hopefully I will overcome these silly problems.

I do like English too, but I find it such a drag reading all these massive books and the lectures are so uninspiring. Perhaps uni isn't right for me, but I don't know what else to do really.

Do you like your course? xx

Hi!

Snap, lol!! I really enjoy english lit actually, I'm a bit of a bookworm so I don't mind all the reading!!! My French is rubbish though, I never speak in oral classes especially since a couple of people in my class are fluent which I don't think is fair!! Have you done/are you doing a year abroad then? I go to France in September, am MAJORLY worried about it!!! But really hoping it will be a positive experience!!!

Hey there - just to add my tuppence worth..

I did French and History at uni and found oral French classes horrible and nerve wracking due to my appalling accent (i don't speak English with a brummy accent, so why French??!) until my year abroad. My year in the South of France was the best thing ever to happen to me. I got a good French accent, found confidence in my speaking French made loads of friends of all nationalities who were also doing Erasmus and really began to relax about being me!
So...don't dread it (although obviously it's kind of terrifying to start with) it could be the year that changes the way you feel about your uni experience!

Get some help for the depression and some conselling for the anxiety and I think your perspective on things might change and if it doesn't you will know you just need to move on from this environment

Hi,
Not doing too badly atm...been staying over in Cardiff with a friend which has been good coz it means I've been going out more. Also decided to go to Paris with the French society in three weeks since I've made some friends recently with some of the girls who are going too, so at least I feel a bit more sociable!! Though on the down side I think I've failed all my French exams this January but I guess there's no point in worrying about that til I get my results.

How are you doing? Are you feeling any happier?
