Money!

Postby Rogue » Mon Aug 07, 2006 12:19 pm

It's my boyfriend's birthday in 2 weeks and I'm completely broke! He knows I don't have much money because I've been supporting him financially too, but he's taking me to Paris for my birthday from his savings and I would feel awful if I didn't get him something. I've got loads of craft things so I could make something for him quite cheaply (though it would be tricky to keep it a secret as we live together). The problem is that I always go over the top with these things. Last time I made him a present it took me six months to do the whole thing, and now I've only got two weeks.
Anyone got any suggestions for something I could make and advice on how to stop going overboard with the project? If I do things my own way it'll be ready for his birthday next year!

Hi Rogue,

Could you make him a personalised collage thingy? I think you can buy already stretched and mounted canvases from art shops - you could then stick loads of pictures/photos etc to it in an arty way, quick coat of varnish over the top to protect it, and voila! Personalised art work - not available in any shop!!!

Good luck with whatever you decide to create! I'm sure he'll love your present - it shows that you've put effort and thought into it.

Thanks for the suggestion, Squeak, but alas, canvas and varnish are out of my price range of zero, and my fella has all the photos on his computer so it would be tricky getting them off without him knowing.
OK, here is what I do have: coloured card, a selection of rubber stamps and inks (including a full alphabet set), more gel pens than you can shake a stick at, four different colours of embossing powder, a heat gun, a very nice craft knife, computer, printer, vector art programme (can use a little), photoshop, and a small amount of creative talent so writing/drawing something isn't out of the question (though I've only got 2 weeks).
So, what would you guys make with a big box full of crafty goodies and several specialist computer programmes at your disposal?

Oh, if anyone is wondering what on earth I did before that took me six months to do, it was an epic poem that reached a grand 21 typed A4 pages in length, handwritten into a nice notebook which each page decorated with celtic patterns from my rubber stamp collection. Something a bit less complex than that would be good :D.
