She won't feel embarrassed. In the room is the nurse/doctor and her. Afterwards she can run for the hills; it's not like she needs to socialise with the doc or nurse to be embarrassed about.

And the nurses are very good. They will make her feel relaxed and comfortable. It's not embarrassing to them: they do it all day long.

I turn 25 in July and as much as I know I should go for a smear test, I am really not looking forward to it! I've been told by friends it hurts and I would be sooo embarrassed! Do you get male doctors or can you request a female doctor? I had a letter years ago before I was 21 (when the age was 21) bu I never went. My moms sister had cancerous cell but luckily it didn't come to anything. I guess I'm just scared as to what they might find! I know I should go but I can't bring myself to pull my pants down and have a complete stranger look at me! Arghhhhhhhh!!!!!!

i think it is slightly uncomfortable but shouldn't be painful
You can make it easier on yourself by relaxing and taking long deep breaths just before so you relax yourself as much as possible

It's usually automatically done by a female, but you could certainly request it if not.

Just when you call up ask for a woman. Mine was done by a female nurse.

It's not painful, it's slightly uncomfortable but it's only minutes. You get something to cover yourself up with so the nurse only see's the relevant bit. The nurse will see it all the time so will know its embarassing for a woman to lie there.

I've just been and booked mine!

I have to go every 6 months as the found abnormal cells a couple of year ago so I had to co for a ? (can't remember what its called)

I always tell the doctors receptionist that its for a smear as I'm sure I was told once it needs to be a longer appointment? They then always ask, would you like the doctor or practice nurse? If they don't ask you can tell them your preference

I really don't mind either way, they've all seen it all before and I'd rather that five minutes of discomfort than the alternative.

There's just one doctor I know at our practice that is quite young and good looking, he's the only one that I wouldn'twant snooping around down there. Funny that!

Just been for my first ever smear this afternoon, and just wanted to say, what was i worried about? I was called in, had a quick couple of questions about my last period, age etc, then she pulled the curtain around and left me to get sorted. She was really nice and friendly and put me at ease straight away as she knew it was my first one she was like "ok lets get this over with quickly".Once i was on the bed with a peice of the white roll stuff covering my modesty, she came in and did the smear. It was over in less than a minute and was not painfull at all.A slight bit of discomfort when she put the speculum in but not as bad as i expected.I just thought id post about this as it really wasnt worth worrying over, and i certainly wont be fussed when the next one comes up.Please nobody put off getting this done x

My girlfriend got hers done! She said it was not as embarrasing as should thought it would be, was over in a matter of minutes. When she got hers done though the nurse also asked if she wanted to be tested for any sexualy transmitted diseases, so she got that done aswell.

It shouldn't be more than 6 weeks - that's how long they say you should wait. I can't remember exactly, but I think it's usually quicker, more like 3 weeks.

I think I was told I'd have to wait 8 weeks. They should tell you when you go and get it done though as it appears everywhere is different.
