Blood Tests

Postby _Chelsea_ » Mon Apr 06, 2009 5:02 pm

Hey guys

I have to have my first ever blood test tomorrow & I'm wondering what to expect. It's just a standard check up kind of deal - Not for a specific thing. How many bottles of blood will they take from me? And also does it hurt?

I've been told to drink plenty of water before hand and just relax my arm when the test is happening.

Any tips on what I can do to calm my nerves? I've considered bringing my iPod along but mom reckons it'll be over before I even get a chance to listen to a full song.

I think this is the right place for this topic...Not sure though, so feel free to move it if needs be :)

They usually take 2-5 tubes of blood when they do blood tests. each tube is about the size of your index finger.

It'll take about 1 minute, maybe 2. The needle hurts a little, but only as it goes in, and it's not a horrible pain or anything, just a bit of a sting.

Drinking plenty of water is a good thing anyway, but I wouldnt worry about that too much for the amount of blood they take during blood tests.

I wouldnt worry too much about your nerves either hun, nurses are used to nervous people, and tend to have their own ways of calming people down.

I prefer to just not look and wait till its over, it's really no big deal

Thanks, Rufio :D

I'm mostly worried about the blood going - It sounds silly but I'm worried about how that would feel, if it'd feel like anything at all!
My only other question then is do they fill the tubes all the way to the top?

I think I'll just stick to not looking and having a chat or singing a song in my head...I'll bring my Ipod just incase but that's my last resort. My mom said the preperation beforehand takes longer than the actual test itself so that's good if it's true!

Is a blood test one of those things where the thought is worse than the actual thing?

Darling, the thought of it absolutely IS worse than the real thing!! :o

I say this because I have a completely irrational phobia about having blood taken - I don't mind spiders, I don't mind needles at all, unless they're taking blood from my arm *crashes onto floor*, I really can't help it.

So take it from a complete wimp - it hardly hurts at all, it takes next to no time, it's no big deal. You're nervous because you don't know what to expect. Well, if it's for something specific, like rubella, they gently slide a needle in (you look the other way), tell you quietly how well you're doing, then take the needle out, and it's over before you know it. You don't feel any weaker for the tiny bit of blood going out into one syringe, it's not like donating blood, where they take 5 gallons then give you tea and biscuits, hard luck! :D

You'll be ok, hun, tell us how it goes, ok?

Awwww, thanks for the wimp to wimp advice peecee

Yo're right - I always feel uncomfortable with what I don't know. It's just like a check up thing to put my mind at ease and stuff, so I'm not sure how much blood will be taken - It's just the thoughts of the blood moving through the needle into a vial :o

Hmmm tea and biscuits...I still wouldn't mind a lollipop and a sticker...Wonder if they give them to 16 year olds

Will definatley let you all know how it goes :)

I'm with peecee; I'm also a wimp.

I HATE needles - they don't hurt; obviously they hurt ever so slightly when they go in but thats it. I know they don't hurt which is why I don't understand my phobia of needles - I'd be a terrible heroin addict!

I give blood and I HATE HATE HATE it; however I think it's a good thing to do. Your mam is right the procedure will be over before you know it; whilst I've never had blood taken they do test it when I give blood and it takes seconds.
A hug is a great gift, one size fits all.
