Feel like dr's fobb me off?

Postby ButterflyAway » Tue Dec 22, 2009 1:58 am

Hey guys

I need some advice and help.
Over the summer i started having severe chest pains which brought on panic attacks which lead me 2 several A&E visits but they had no idea what it could be without seeing a specialist, they told me to go to dr's to be refered on, i keep having these severe chest pains but have learnt to stop the panic attacks now, i went dr's n he told me that it was just in my head a mental problem like its a panic attack or anxiety, he said to just go and il be fine, thing is... since then ive had alot more but without the panic but i cry because the pain is soo severe, the hosp gave me tricks 2 help like ibruprofen or heat patches but none of these work atall....

It happens at times when im rele calm...when im lying in bed.... standing at bus stop.. can last up to two hours.. and its ruining my life its making me so down n scared 2 go out or stay at someones... i feel like the dr isnt paying attention, something is seriously wrong but as always fobbing me off as its all in my head... also my breathing has always been short for the last 4-5 years... very short breaths no matter wot excercises i do... i do have trouble breathing but no one has tested me for nefing .. not asthma nothing, last week it happened at 4am n i was so scared to go bed incase i didnt wake up..

PLEASE give me advice, my life is just going down... and i feel so alone like no one believes the pain, all my family saw the state i first got in and thought id die cause of what happened..

I told the dr the hosp told me to get them 2 refer me but he said '' therees no tests to help u''

I honestly believe the doctor is right
I know several people who have had this condition and it is always related to an aniexty issue even if it's subconcious
I think you need to ask the doctor for conselling/cognitive therapy if he believes it is aniexty too.
They can not only get to the route of it but help you stop it when it starts
Go to another doctor if your not happy with the one you have been seeing and if they say the same then I think you have to accept this is whats wrong.
You may be causing it to some extent because you are convinced there is something else wrong. Once you break the cycle of convincing yourself you have soemthing major the internal aniexty should relieve itself
Life is for living so live it to the fullest

Heya.
But i dont have anxiety and since i learnt how to deal with not panicking i dont have attacks just the severe pain, when the dr saw me he felt my chest and said it was inflammed all over yet still said it was in my heaD??

What do i need counselling over?
Im not convinced its something severe but im 20 yrs old i shouldnt be having these severe chest pains so often.

Hi Butterflyaway,

i went to the doctors with the same complaint as you, im 25 and thought i was honestly going to or even going through a heart attack every time the pain came, which was usually at night time when i was relaxing just before bed. I was too scared to lie down. it felt like my heart was out of time, beating alot harder, faster and just felt like it was going to burst out of my chest.

My doctor said it was normal too, she said that alot of young people have it and its just either down to anxiety or where your heart becomes out of time and it almost jump starts itself back into time by fluttering, which can be painful.
But to be on the safe side, she referred me to have a heart monitor for 24 hours. I went to the hospital and its just basically a small box you carry round for the day with wires leading to stickers to your chest and back (its alot more techincal then im explaining!) which measures your hearts rhythm / beats for a whole 24 hour period then you just drop it off the next day and they will analyse the results. Its completely consealable aswell, i even went to work wearing it and no one noticed.

I knew after id worn it that mine problem was down to anxiety, as ive never had the problem since and the hospital never contacted me for any anomalies in my results.

But like you i never had panic attacks or even felt anxiety prior to the the pains i had, point im trying to make is that although you may not mentally feel anxious, anxiety can result in a physical reaction.

the other alternative is for your doctor to have an ECG, which again is a heart monitor although you cant carry this one round with you and they do it for a few mins then and there and your results get printed out.

from the fruit come seeds and
from the seeds you have a harvest full of dreams.

Yes, for what it's worth I had to see my GP for shortness of breath at about your age . . . was convinced I had a pulmonary problem, didn't feel anxious . . . but there was nothing wrong with me, it was entirely anxiety. Anxiety is extremely common, almost normal, in young people. Your body expresses something that your mind doesn't want to admit.
