My first home - which energy supplier?

Hi all,

Need a bit of advice if anyone can help.
I've just bought my first home. It's 3 bedrooms, with bathroom, kitchen and living room/diner. There are two of us in the house but we are out most of the day. The central heating system is being put in and will run off a new combi boiler and the roof has great new insulation. I use energy saving lightbulbs and am conscious about leaving things on etc.

What I am unsure is that because I have no knowledge of my annual usage I can't properly compare energy suppliers etc. I need the gas supply reconnecting so will do that with one of the suppliers - the pipe is to the house but needs a new meter. Does anyone have any ideas about who I should choose?

My currect electricity is with SWALEC.
Heard Npower or Scottish Power was quite cheap by me (mid wales), anyone used their online tariffs?

Thanks in advance, Jen

is it possible to ask the previous owner for their annual usage to get an idea?

That's a good idea, but sadly the lady living in it passed away a year ago and the property had an old electric system with storage heaters so the comparison wouldn't really be possible.

I have been with a few different energy suppliers and by far the most reasonable has been EDF.We have the pre-payment metres in and our house sounds very similar in size to yours, and I also have my tumble dryer on quite a bit but My electricity lasts for ages.I dont know if you have EDF in wales though??

difficult one. perhaps you just have to go with whoever for the first 6 months to give yourelf a base for comparison

Thanks all.
I don't really want to go down the prepayment meter route because I have been told it's cheaper to pay monthly which I am happy to do.
Bel bel I think I probably will have to see what the first 6 months are like, perhaps distinguishing them initially on who will charge less to get the supply up and running again.
