They owe me money!! :oP

Postby whoopsie » Fri Jan 09, 2009 12:41 pm

Just a quick question around assertiveness (I think)

Before xmas, my company held an xmas party for the staff and their children in our office (we took my boyfriends daughter and she had a lovely time). I was asked, along with my boyfriend, to play a few acoustic xmas songs in the background for around half hour or so and was told that we would be paid £200 for this. That was on the 18th Dec, and no one has mentioned anything about the money, and I feel a bit rude asking, esp as most of the time we were playing music to ourselves, but we did do what was asked.

I did consider just leaving it, but yesterday was told that my job is at risk so obviously money, as small as it may be, has become more important than ever and I feel I should ask for what was promised to me.

How should I go about this? Should I email the guy who I arranged it with? (Even tho I can see him from my desk!!!). I'm just not really sure how to approach it, if at all.

if you haven't been paid since then i would wait for your next pay packet, say you noticed the xmas music money wasn't there ans aksed how it is going to be paid to you. This will start the conversation going without looking rude

I'd go with what Bel-bel suggested. Either that or try and find out who asked him to ask you and go above him and ask!

The time has come!! I didn't receive the money in my salary last month, so I want to chase this. The thing is, the guy I need to ask is the guy who initiated my disciplinary.

I'm would prefer to ask via email, as I don't want to talk him face to face. Any ideas on how I should word it? I'm not great at writing emails, esp ones requesting money!!!

Thanks in advance.

It depends a bit on the exact circumstances, and how your company likes things handled, but how about:

"Dear XXX

On the XXth December me and Mr XXX were asked to provide live music for the staff Christmas party. It was agreed that we should be paid £200 for doing this. We do not seem to have received this payment yet, and I would be grateful if you could sort this out for me.

Kind regards,
Whoopsie "

I don't think it needs to be quite that formal. Probably something along the lines of

Hi 'poo head' (cos he is one!!)

Please could you advise when how the £200 fee for mine and my boyfriends performance at the Office Christmas party will be paid to me as it wasn't in my salary last month

Does that sound ok? I'm not good at writing letters.

Sounds fine to me. :D

I've very slightly modified Snail's and your responses as follows:

"Dear XXX

On the XXth December, you asked my boyfriend and me to provide live music for the staff Christmas party, which we did. It was agreed that we should be paid £200 for doing this. We haven't received this payment yet, and I would be grateful if you could sort this out for me.

If it was a definite request, and you were promised £200, then you're entitled to ask for the money. Do you have any witnesses to the original conversation about the money?

How about…

Hi,

Please could you advise me how and when the £200 agreed fee for the performance my boyfriend and I did at the Office Christmas party on DATE will be paid. It wasn’t in my salary for December or January and I have heard nothing about it.

Many Thanks

Whoopsie

I got a response, he apologised for the delay and said he would look into the best way to pay me.
