If you don't have any sort of contract then you have no come back. Can't you contact another manager or someone from head office if you have one?

I know this is awful and you have my deepest sympathy in regard to your nan but without a contract you don't have a leg to stand on
I would start looking for another job, as you said yourself you will be happier out of there
