Relative in hospital what to say to boss

Postby Sugar217399 » Mon Jul 20, 2009 9:02 am

My close relative went into hospital last night because she attempted suicide. Ive been up there all night and I text my boss saying I wouldnt be in work because they had been rushed in and i wanted to be with them. She text back this morning saying to ring her today. I know shes going to ask why I was off and why she was in hospital and I dont know what to say. Everyone is saying to tell the truth but I think its too personal. What else can I say?

If she doesn't know your relative why is it a problem to tell her
If she does know your relative then tell he it's too personal to discuss and you don't want to break the person confidence
She may just be trying to asses whether to make you take it as holiday or compassionate leave

I think you're just going to have to tell her - she has a right to know why you were off

Tell her why you were off, maybe say they attempted suicide but it's too hard for you to talk about it. They shouldn't need to know details.
