How much for the wedding gift?

My mate who used to be a housemate is getting married next month. He invited me by text to the evening do. I recently texted back to ask if he had a wedding list and he replied "contributions towards honeymoon in Sri Lanka are more than welcome".

Some people seem to think it is tacky to ask for cash and to be honest I don't like the idea of them knowing exactly how much I have given, but I can't see any alternative. Has anyone got any opinions on this and what would you consider to be an appropriate sum? I have quite a modest income and not much of it is disposable.

How much can you afford?

When one of my friends got engaged - all the girls from uni clubbed together to put in a large amount. We got a far better present with all out £20 combined than separate. Can you not club together with someone to make it a large amount and just put everyones names on it?

it really is the norm these days and I am sure any amount will be appreciated
Going through so many cards they won't remeber what everyone has put in either
£20 - £30 should be more than enough not to offend

also you say you don't want them to know how much your spending but if they wanted to they can look up any item on the internet to get an idea of how much you spent
Most people really don't care it's the thought that counts

Maybe you could get some money changed in to the Sri Lankan currency? That way it shows you have put more thought in to it and it will take her a while to work out how much it is in pounds! I agree with the others though, around £20 is good. My friend is getting married in June and going to Egypt so I was just going to get £20 worth of Egyptian currency.

Oh I agree the currency shows you've put more effort in. Research it first though as I've been to tunisia a few times and you aren't supposed to take of their curreny into or out of the country; you can get it all changed at the airport. Just make sure it's nothing like that - if it is you won't get the money here anyway.

that is a great idea, you can pick up frames really reasonably and you always want loads after the wedding not just for home but to take to work too

I think the idea of getting around £20 changed into the currency is the best idea!
I'm sure they'll be greatful of any contribution you give and it shows you've put some more thought into it by getting it changed for them

Hope it goes well
