Two friends travelling to Thailand and I can't!

Hi everyone, I need a bit of advice! I have two friends that are travelling to Thailand for 5 weeks holiday and I can't go due to work committments! The thing is, I'm really happy for them, and they both, ESP one has had a rough time of it work wise lately, so they deserve to go away! The thing is, because of their committments to this holiday, and they are really the only close friends that I would go on holidays with and it means that I won't be able to go away really unless on my own! However thinking about it, I love walking especially, and I was thinking of joining a walking group over where I live as I seen that they go away on trips and that, in Europe and places of specific interest like that! So my question to people out there is should I take this big step and meet more people and join this young walking group? Or would I be betraying my friends in doing so?

Please help, all advice welcome!

IMO, I really cant see how that could be seen as betraying them. If you make it honestly clear you can not get off work, it isn't really your fault (Lets face it, I doubt many employers would not want to hear "I want to book some time off.. for five weeks")~ But that doesnt mean you have to sit inside and do nothing when you get a day off during the time they are away. I think it could be worth explaining to them that you can't do it, that you are really glad they can get the chance to go and then mention about the walking group, and I'm assuming, this wouldn't five weeks at a time? more like a week? which is a reasonable time for anyone to be able to get the holidya leave. If they are real friends I then I expect they will probably be happy for you too, as this sounds like such a positive step to take, and it will be good for you to be socialising/and having another hobby while you are still working. Your world doesnt need to grind to a halt because you can't go, your entitled to get your fun too :)

Yea that's the way I see it as well! It's great they are getting away and if truth be told I am looking forward to doing something new and learning about new places etc! What I find hard is when we go out somewhere and they start talking about it, and then the question gets aimed towards me like 'and why arnt you going'! And it gets a bit annoying after a while to b honest! But that's life I suppose and I'll just have to learn to deal with it really! Thanks for your advice and I'll definitely take it on board!

Cheers!

All those questions will pass in time anyway. You won't be betraying your friends. Just explain why you can't take 5 weeks off (5 weeks is pretty long, really!) then tell them later about the walking group. Go ahead with the walking group - it's not a crime to have your own fun plus it's a great opportunity to meet more people and friends. ;)
