Anxiety about going back to full time college at 29

Postby emily4amanda » Wed Jul 29, 2009 9:43 pm

[list=]Hi everyone this is the first time iv posted on here so nice to meet you all lol!

The thing is, I am 29 and thinking of going to college to study beauty therapy, I did this at college when I was 16 but dropped out towards the end for silly reasons. I have taken up a lot of subjects and quit them half way through and now its become a real issue to go back to college. Ive always wanted to go back to study beauty but im scared it will be like last time. I was very shy when I was 16 and didnt make friends easily and the teachers weren't very helpful, although now Im quite bubbly im still very nervous and anxious about going back and opening old wounds especially if my old teachers are there. Im also worried iv left it too late and I won't be able to do it and will feel humiliated as there will be lots of younger students.

Any advise or comments at all would be greatly appreciated thanks!!!

If it's something you have always wanted to do, would you rather go back and say I tried or would you rather wonder what if forever?

Of course most of the people on your course will be younger, it's nothing to worry about. They'll all probably look up to you and want to be your friend.

When I was at uni most of the people on my course were 10 years older than me and it wasn't an issue.
A hug is a great gift, one size fits all.

helloo :) im at college now, 17 , pretty shy too, maybe like u used to be, so i can understand abit. There are people older tahn me in collge, and noone treats them any differently, if that helps. But you know, you could always do evening lectures instead of day ones. Everyone one there generalluy tends to be older. I have a friend who attended them so she could get a job in the day time and she said everyone there was in their 20s/30s. So maybe that would be a better option for you if it would make u feel more confortable?? Plus you might find lots of people in the same position as you there and will probably have differnt lecturers too. hope that helped x
i will get a life someday xx

Hi,
I think you should give it another go. You're older now and will be able to handle things differently. Plus, loads of people go back to college as mature students these days - it's normal! You only have to look at a college prospectus to see all the courses available to mature students. You don't have to spend loads of time socialising straight away - or at all - although I completely agree with dipsydoodlenoodle that the other students will probably look up to you anyway. I'm at college part time doing my teacher training at the mo, and there's such a massive age range of people on the course. It doesn't really matter because ultimately you're all in the same position, and you all have a big thing in common: you're interested in beauty and all have the same homework!

The other big incentive is that if you want to work in beauty, going to study it at college is probably the best way that you can do it. It would be hard to get an apprenticeship now and you'll need that qualification to get into it properly.

Wishing you the very best of luck - hope you enjoy it!

When I was at uni, one of my best friends was a 41 year old mother of two.
If you click with someone you click and that's it.

Good luck with it all and enjoy it.
