Coincidence, or the big man messing with us?

Postby ILoveChristmas » Wed Sep 09, 2009 1:28 pm

Hello all, i've been away from PP for a month or so for one reason or another, but i'm back with a strange semi statement, semi question.

For as long as I can remember i've noticed strange 'coincidences' surrounding events in life. I'll try and explain what I mean.

My ex partner and mother of my son has just got herself yet another new boyfriend, who's name is Paul Clark. The next night after she told me that, I was reading my son a book and the name of the character was Paul. Last night I was reading a magazine and the name of the author was Paul Clark. Today i'm watching television and everyone seems to be called Paul.

Now I know some people will say (and it's probably true) that these coincidences would have happened anyway and I just wouldn't have picked up on them, but I sometimes like to think that god, or someone, is having some fun with us when things like this happen.

ILC

Im going to be one of those people and say I think the name paul is on your mind and its just jumping out at you from places that it has always been but you are noticing it more. There may be more to it but thats what I think.

I agree with Kerrie, but then again I would - I don't believe in anything like that!

I think you're probably more aware of it ILC.

Like if I learn a new word, I seem to hear people say it all the time.

Paul is a pretty common name after all, it's not as unusual as ILoveChristmas :p

Actually, it's just occurred to me that I work with a Paul Clarke! I hope it's not the same one as he is married though, haha

haha Rufio :p

I'm sure you're all absolutely right and that it's all coincidence, but it's funny how it happens.

I can't go around wishing much pain and agony on everyone called Paul, so I should probably just calm down and go back to work.

You dont need to wish pain and agony on him ILC!

Just think, she'll be all loved up with him, which means you get more time with your son, and thats a good thing :)

I think its just a common name.
If you look at the credits on most programmes you will notice theres always a 'Steve'
One of my old flying instructors was called Steve.. its not really a coincidence, just a common name.
I have a friend called Paul, and a relative too, one of my ex's left me for a guy called Paul aswell.
They're just common names. :)
Remember how the runway lights looked one night long ago when you were lost and found your way, and how-you still dont know?

Nice to see you back ILC.
Yes it is just an unhappy coincidence but spooky nethertheless. It's the author with the same full name that is the weirdest. :o

It's like when people think they might be pregnant and they see babies everywhere.

I was looking at (okay, stalking) someone's Facebook page yesterday - someone who I hadn't seen for about 9 years - and guess what? I saw them at Tesco Express today!

The trouble is, humans don't really understand probability, coincidences, or randomness. Believe me, my consultancy work (where members of the public are referred to me to answer their questions) would be soooooo much easier if they did!

Moosey, did you approach the person?

No I didn't approach him, Snail. I sort of put my antlers down and scurried into Tesco!

I agree with everyone else, it's just more on your mind at the minute so you notice it more often. Just try it and look out for people called "Gary" or something and you'll notice a load of Garys...

Where I live (ok it's not a coincidence but it's funny to me), there is a lighthouse and next to the lighthouse there is a "point" it's called X X point (the X X is my cousins name) - someone of the same name was hung on the spot 200years earlier for commiting a crime - I find it amusing as my cousin used to live close by there.

That is a coincidence Moose with your facebook stalking; I've done that a few times, I almost walked smack bang into someone I went to school with; I got such a shock when I realised it was her.

This is a classic example of coincidence; the exact same numbers have been drawn in the Bulgarian national lottery two weeks in a row, odds of that were 4.2 million to 1.

Coincidences are normal, but I can never seem to get the public to understand that :headache:
