Shocked - People Getting Sacked!

Postby RagDoll » Tue Oct 20, 2009 4:02 pm

Hi all,

Two people from work have just been given the sack for their internet usage!! I knew their usage was being investigated, but I am shocked to find out they've been given the sack. Our company's policy is that we should only use the internet for personal use in our own time e.g. during our lunch break. I'm not entirely sure what these people were up to, but they were apparently given the sack and told to go home - they weren't even allowed to go back to their desks!!

As such, this has pretty much scared the life out of me - I would be devastated if I got the sack and have decided I am going to have to severely limit my time on PP (and other websites) :(

It's a joke because I am only on here when I am really bored at work and have nothing to do, but they don't seem to care about that as long as you don't break any rules and are happy to just sit around doing nothing. Brilliant philosophy!

I would think that their usage wasn't just high but that it breached other rules. Normally it would be a slap on the wrist first, so to be sacked is pretty extreme, and they will have to have a water tight case to sack them, so I wouldn't worry too much. Why not clarify it with your manager, because although most companies state during your lunch, a little leeway is normally given.

I know one of them was setting up/running some sort of business from work and using the net to do so, so obviously that was something over and above just high internet usage, but I'm not aware that the other person did anything other than look at random websites all day. I know it'd be over-looked by the managers in our office if we were on the odd website from time-to-time, even in core houses, but sometimes I'm on PP nearly all day (when I have nothing to do I might add - when I am busy, I'm not on). We are a big company, however, and if our I.T. department starts investigating peoples' internet usage (I'm scared that these two people being sacked will spark more investigation), I will look pretty bad and just because my manager looks at the BBC website etc. it won't mean I am any less to blame for looking at PP and whatever other websites I go on. I'm a bit worried.

Sounds like one got sacked for running their business while at work.
The other probably looked at porn or something. I doubt they'll sack you for using PP. You're only ever on here when you have no work to do so they cant really sack you anyway. If they do, take it all to a tribunal.

They probably have a appliance, that keeps a record of everyones usage. I work in IT, we have an appliance, that firstly blocks websites, and seconds keeps a record of all other types of sites that you visit. When you get blocked from sites, do you get a page up telling you what is blocking it?

I would say, that they would have been on it, all the time. and that their work would have suffered. I will ask my colleague who manages our appliance, what is the average most people spend online.

there's no way he could have looked at porn - sites like that are blocked at work. I can't even get on Facebook because it's a social networking site and that's tame in comparison to porn!

That's true, but I'm not sure it really works like that - ok, I have good reason to be on here (as I get bored) and it's not like my work is suffering for it, but I doubt they would look at it like that - company rules/policy is just that.. it's not something you should really decide to abide depending on circumstances :-?

it usually says something about why the site is blocked e.g. social networking site/gambling etc etc.

thanks, would be interesting to know!

What are you supposed to do in work when you have nothing to do? I'm not being sarcy, its just im curious as to what they want you to do when there is no work.

I also use the internet whilst I'm lacking work too. Most of the most used sites get blocked.

It depends Captain, I spend more time on the internet than I should, which my immediate boss doesn't mind. But the deputy chief exec, always comes and checks what is on your screen, if he thinks you are not working. There are levels that are acceptable, but some workplaces think that you should find work to do when you aren't working. I try to find other things, or admin work when my phone isn't ringing.

Oh and Ragdoll, just because porn sites are blocked, some people are clever, and go to foreign porn sites, which can get round some blocking systems, especially as some blocking software goes on words found on the website and have to know about the websites to block them. it does depend on what sort of blocking software they use. Where I used to work, all regular porn sites were banned, and someone got on foreign porn sites, so one of the IT guys had to then add them all to the blocked list.

Captain, your question is perfectly valid and one I ask myself all the time! It's one of the reasons I get so narked with where I work - they ignore the root cause of everything. In my old team, my line manager once asked to have a word with me and took me into a meeting room to basically tell me off for using my mobile (I was texting a friend). I said it was fair enough that he was pulling me up for it, but that I was only doing it because I had no work on and wouldn't be doing it if I did. He didn't acknowledge that point or look into getting me more work, his attitude was just basically 'stop texting' (which obviously I did).

As with Skarlet, I do try and find bits of work to do when I don't have anything on, but sometimes it's impossible if there just isn't that much to do. When I ask my boss for something to get on with, he usually gives me a task which lasts all of half an hour, then I'm back to square one. I can't begin to tell you how frustrating it is!!

Anyway, re: porn sites, I am sure you're right, but I still don't think that was the issue with regards to the colleague who got sacked. I've been speaking to someone who knew them both quite well and I just think he was spending pretty much 100% of his time at work on random websites.

Anyway, the top and bottom of all this is although I am not suggesting I am going to get the sack if I come on PP every now and again, I am going to have to be a lot more careful about how much I use it and when I am on here. I think I should be ok as long as I am not using it during core hours (9.30 - 12 and 2 - 3.30pm).

I wasn't suggesting you didn't ragdoll, I know how frustrating it can be. I just meant thats what I try to do. It can be impossible to find additional work to do, and I try really hard to not spend hours on the net. tis hard though.

I think the problem comes, when you aren't performing at work either, so if you do all the work assigned, but then spend a couple of hours on the net, they will be okay, if you don't, and the net is all you are doing, then you will face the sack.

I know Skarlet :) I was just agreeing with you in the sense I do the same as you e.g. try to find work, but just also wanted to point out that sometimes, in my work, there literally isn't work to find. It's a pain in the bum!

Just trying to be sensible about when I use the net, Captain. Not much else I can do :( I'd be gutted if I got the sack!!

I have also set up a meeting with my line manager to discuss my workload (e.g. lack of it), I've done this before and it's not got me anywhere, but I think I'm going to be more blunt and forceful about it this time.

Atleast by setting up the meetings you're covering your own back, arent you? That way if you do get the sack (which you wont) you will be able to say 'I used the net when I had nothing to do, I organised X amount of meetings with multiple requests to increase my workload, it was never done and therefore I had masses of free time'
