Brazil scoops up Olympics

Postby backsmith » Thu Nov 26, 2009 10:47 am

Hello,
As much as I like the Olympics coming to Canada, I always prefer that it's hosted in developing countries. The last I heard, they were leaning towards the Hope-injected US. Now, it's been officially announced that Brazil will host.

I don't really like the Olympics for the content (sports, blea). But I enjoy the attention and economic stimulus they bring to other countries.

I agree ont his point, I dont really like the olympics myself, and its being hosted in my country in 2012. London does not need anymore economic stimulation. I know the ressesion has hit, but its not the end of the world. there are more needy countries! :D Thanks for bringing this up backsmith, although I think this is the wrong place to have posted this :D

Does the Olympics really bring economic benefits though or just an economic burden? It costs an absolute fortune to host it!

Yes it does cost alot of money to host, but all that and more is clawed back from the publicity and tourism of the city it is hosted in! :D You can imagine how many millions of people go to that country to watch the olympics? Lol

I'm not sure if overall it's really the right things for developing countries - surely their money would be best spent elsewhere? Ok, it'll raise the profile of the country and bring economic benefits in terms of boosted tourism, but that does relatively little for the poor in those countries.

I was going to say the same as ragdoll about it being more of a burden.

I don't live in London but i have been down twice when the London Marathon has been on and to be honest they struggle to cope with the masses that flock to the place for that so god only knows how chaotic it's going to be when it's time for the olympics.
