City Socialising?

Postby rufio89 » Wed Feb 16, 2011 12:03 pm

Hi All,

Has anyone ever used this website? For those who have never heard of it, it's a website where people who want to make friends in their city go on, and then events are organised for the members to meet up and meet each other.

When I split up with my ex, I was determined to start doing lots of things, keep myself busy and fill my time etc, but it's been over a month now and I've found my momentum is lagging and I'm spending more and more time at home by myself. Especially after last Friday's disaster, I'm struggling to think of ways to fill my time as I'm really not up for going into town at the moment.

I was thinking of joining up on that website and seeing if I could make some new friends that way, but I'm a little bit worried about it. I just wanted to know if anyone had made any friends this sort of way (or had any bad experiences).

I dont really have a lot of friends here, except the people from work, and they all seem to have partners or be dating and have things to do in the evenings. I've been spending a lot of time at my Mum's house at the weekends, and while it's nice to see her and spend time with her, I dont want that to become habit. I want to spend time with my friends.

I'm really struggling if I'm honest. I told myself I want to make sure I stay single, but I'm really lonely :(

hey Rufio,

I signed up to it, but never went because you have to pay for it- and it seems kinda odd to have to pay to go to meetings in pubs. I found a free one, and there could be similar ones where you live. I found them on gumtree. I haven't really made any new friends through the one I went to, but I am going to go back and try again- I always feel kind of awkward, but the first time I went everyone seemed pretty nice.
It might be worth a try.

Hi Rufio,

first of all i'm sorry to hear about your bf :( I've been away for a while and had no idea.

Re City Socialising, I moved to Edinburgh just over a month ago and joined CS as my manager is one of the hosts and recommended it, and I have found it to be absolutely brilliant tbh. I came here not knowing a soul and now I've made lots of friends and always have sth to do of an evening or weekend, in fact I'm just back from a pub quiz just now!

I would def recommend it 100%

the only drawback is unwanted male attention, most of the guys seem to think it's a dating site but 90% of the people I've spoken to seem to be genuine people in the same situation as myself just wanting to meet new people.
not if you were the last dandy on earth

I joined city socialising but only went a couple of times as it seemed more of a life-style commitment than I could manage. I do know people who made a real go of it, attending several events a month until they had their own social network. I've previously done the same thing on gumtree and have made some life-long friends out of it. That's much harder to use now as they shut the friends and romance part of the site down.

I have been a member of this and Spice. I found that I only ended up doing one or two things a month and with their subscription prices.. it ended up being pretty expensive.. They are both around £16 per month.

I decided to create my own site offering the same features for free. Thought it would be better so that could spend the money I would've wasted on a subscription on going out instead...

Time will tell :-)

Hi,

First of all I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

The only time I've visited City Socialising was to ask them to put a link to my website - which they kindly refused.

I do have a couple of suggestions:

Firstly you could try to find out if there are any free singles events in your area (eg discos)

Secondly, have you tried 'Plenty Of Fish'? It is a dating site but also meetups are organised at various venues for members.

And it's free to become a member!
