It occured to me today that we do not have a place for members to pay respects to the deceased on their anniversaries. So here we are.
Today is the anniversary of my friend Paul Hillyard, he died this day on 2002 due to cancer.
Out troops moved into the trench; Until all corners were filled
Then we took aim at the oncoming force; And broke the deathly still
Havoc broke out acros the field; As we ran into the fray
The sun poked over the hill; To mark the start of day
The fight raged on for two more days; 'Til finally it was through
We dragged out battered bodies back; Only to start anew
Month after month we pushed ourselves; going on a constant man hunt
We'd neither stop to eat nor slumber; Until all'd be quiet on the Western front
Daily I tried to write my wife; I wondered how she would survive
I'd wait until the carrier'd come; But no letter from her arrived
Into a battle we charged head on; My life-long friend at my side
Then out of the blue, some shrapnel flew; My companion fell down and died
I dropped to my knees, my heart torn in two;As I checked at his chest for a beat
Right then though the war was not over; I felt the let down of defeat
I stood up slowly, the pain sinking in; As I realized the meaning of war
Not to gain more than we need; And to kill a man? What for?
War was not about fighting; Or killing for more then we need
It's about about no longer having family; All because of a terrible greed
It's about not being able to go to town; Without being shot at or bombed
It's about always living in terror; So much that you can not be calmed
I slowly turned and walked away; My shoulders slumped at my side
My legs felt numb with pain; As I remembered my friend had just died
My commander soon came up to me; Excitement glowed on his face
No joy could ever have been so great; We'd won the last and final race
Oh such happniess I felt just then; I could only reply with a grunt
After a much hard earned victory; All was quiet on the Western front
I went back home to my wife; But she was not to be found
A graveyard stone then told me; She was far beneath the ground
Another wave of pain shook my frame; As I made my way into town
People crouched beneath small shacks; Since all homes had been burned to the ground
Yet, no more planes polluted the sky; No more bombs came fast and blunt
The war had left terrible scars; But all was quiet on the Western front
