Asbestos contamination

Postby Dimplex » Mon Jan 23, 2012 3:24 pm

I have been suspended from work for bringing the companys name into disrepute for disscusing on an open forum, although the company name or individuals were not named. I and a number of workers have been exposed to Asbestos dust.
No proper training given (asbestos awareness courses only) being told to go into an asbestos contanminated building (it took a licened company to clean the asbestos eventually) and only disposable dust masks (no one fitted for) and over shoes given and disposed of in normal waste bins.
The list is endless and I refused to have anything to do with it and complained to my managment but was just ignored as they dont want to upset the customer. Our firm is a big multi national company doing contract work for the goverment on a nuclear site.
I have raised concerns of safety with our managment over the past 5 years but have been bullied and threatened to keep my mouth shut or I would get sacked, Even the GM has thrown reports of saftey violation in the bin right in front of me, even though I had given it to my safety officer which she should have put directly into the system, but instead went running to the GM.
I have a meeting next week saying I have been charged with making defamatory comments on a social networking site. This will be the second meeting the first didnt go very well and they seem to be just blaming me for not doing anything about all the safety violations. what I was supposed to do apart from what I did, no-one knows.
I'm not in a Union so wondering if anyone here has had any similar experience and advice, would it be worth going to HSE or anything like that. There have been a lot of safety violations not just the Asbestos.
Our managment are very agressive verbally. I have worked here for 12 years and I like my job itself, but in the last 5 years it's a constant fight with managment when it comes to safety.

Sounds like you need legal advice - could you go to the Citizen's Advice Bureau at all?

I would start by talking to HSE
http://www.hse.gov.uk/contact/complaints.htm

They will take this very seriously

I would however get advice on your job from CAB

Definitely get down to the CAB, I found them very helpful when I was made redundant suddenly with no notice.
Either that or find an employment lawyer.

Well I received a final written warning and back to work, even though I refused to apologise for what I wrote, as I said to them "I spent 5 years trying to raise these complaints and through frustration I ended having to go onto an open forum.
Non of the issuses I raised will be acted on they have put it down to "communication problems"
I found out today that due to the amount of senior managers that I have implicated in wrong doings, there are no more managers to deal with my case which would mean getting someone from head office in london to come up, which the managment don't want as it would bring to light all the problems that are going on with this site and upset the little cliche of managers who look after each other. So thats why it's been cleared up quickly and not sacking me means no appeal which would have gone to the london office.
So I will be asking our main customer if I can now put in a violation of safety report that my managment refused to allow me to put in 12 months ago and the reason why it's so late.
The saga continues.

I'd still be tempted to go to the CAB though, just to see where you stand on things.

Let us know what happens.
