Do I need to see a doctor if I have tonsillitus?

Postby rufio89 » Tue Mar 20, 2012 10:30 am

Hi,

I think I've got tonsillitus, do I need to see a doctor or will it go away on its own?

Thanks :)

Hiya,

I think it's one of those things that can clear up by itself but I'd be inclined to see the doc anyway, so they can have it on record and determine if it's bacterial or viral. Then get the right treatment for you.

Hope you feel better soon :) xx

If it's bacterial you will need antibiotics but viral will just go away on it's own
Highlandcow is right though, go to the doctors in case you keep getting bouts of it, you want it on record so they address it sooner rather than later

I'd go to the doctor just incase you do need anti-biotics. Also have you have tonsillitus before? I recently thought i had tonsillitus but it turned out to be glandular fever which was very nasty. So if you have white spots on your tonsills i would def recommend a visit.

I get tonsillitis all the time, whenever I get a bit stressed or run down, or sometimes just out of the blue. I've been like that since I was about 15. There are loads of different causes, so I'd only go to the doc's if it's very bad or persistent. I don't bother to go any more myself, as antibiotics do cure it but (not surprisingly) it comes back much more quickly than when I fight it off myself. They don't do tonsillectomies like they used to - my doctor said they now prefer to leave the tonsils in place as they play an important role in fighting the infection.
